Lifeworks Designer Home Improvement Challenge
PROJECT PROFILE
Through the Lifeworks Designer Home Improvement Challenge project we had the pleasure meeting and working with a young girl named Sierra. She is 17 and has two boys John Paul, 2 and Jordan 3 months. Sierra among other young teens came to Lifeworks looking for help,a second chance, and an opportunity to better their lives. Sierra's life revolves around her two boys. Her face gleams at the mere mention of their names. She is a proud mother. Sierra however has learned the hard way of how tough it is being a young single mother but that doesnt keep her from working hard to giving her boys a good life. Like most of us, a little help never hurt anyone. I am so glad that we had the opportunity to help Sierra.
Because of our efforts, Project Suite Pea was given an award for going "Above and Beyond". Listed below are just some of the things we did for Sierra. Project Suite Pea looks forward to helping many more like Sierra. This is our mission and purpose for establishing Project Suite Pea.
The things I believe we did that were above and beyond was the following:
- We baby proofed her entire apartment.
- We baby proofed her patio so that became a extra room/space for her and her kids to enjoy. We were working with such a small space that we were able to give her another functionable room/space to enjoy.
- We set a professional photo shoot with photographer Sarah Dowe for her and her two sons at Botanical Gardens. She didnt have any pictures of the three of them and that was important to her.
- Monogrammed towels. One of our volunteers, Leslie Moore, had towels monogrammed for her with the initial of her last name and of the two boys names. It gave her things and her apartment more of a sense of "hers".
- Rachel and Sherie bought her a mom necklace with two boy pendants on it. Just a small gift from one mother to another.
- We gave her gift cards that were donated from people so she has financial resources after the HIC was over. For example, HEB gift cards. $200.00 Kohl's gift cards donated by Tracy Rawl and $50.00 donated by a 10 year old named Hannah who raised over a $1000.00 for the HIC.
- We gave her clothes that were donated from the staff and parents from Child's Way from sizes 3months to 5T so she wouldnt have to worry about constantly buying clothes because we know as mom's how expensive that can be. They also donated toys, movies, books, food and bottles.
- Rachel literally took everything Sierra said she wanted and like and made it a reality. From colors to the couch to the crosses on the wall. Rachel listened to Sierra and took her words and made it a reality.
- We gave her a computer donated by Discount Electronics so she can eventually use it for school to further her education.
- We gave her a stroller donated by Robin Warnken. Sierra really wanted a stroller because she was always carrying Jordan in the car carrier and John Paul by the hand. When we showed her the stroller she said, "Look John Paul. Now we can go for walks."
- Rachel gave Sierra an entire kitchen filled with every utensil, pan and cookbook you could think of for her to cook for her family. Most important, when we first spoke with Sierra she specifically asked for a cookie pan. Well she definitely got that and so much more.
- Courtney Oldham donated a high chair and a 8" portable DVD player.
- Angela Morris donated a DVD player and a gift card.
- Julie and David Moody donated their 13 year old sons old baby mattress. They were happy to see it going to a good family.
- Rachel was able to design the room and give Sierra a crib for Jordan and a toddler bed for John Paul so she would be able to finally sleep alone without sharing the full size bed with her two sons.
***Because of legality reasons, the kids in these homes cannot be photographed or recorded.
